a lifetime burning

Not returning to lead Parliament after all? (The collective noun for Rooks is, of course, a Parliament of Rooks).

Although their feathers are black, like other black birds when caught in sunlight you quite often get an interesting iridescent sheen, as here.  (... and no, that isn't something I've done anything to in the editing software). You can always tell a rook by its extended bone coloured beak, quite unlike that of the smaller jackdaw, or the larger carrion crow.

I know that ascribing human emotions to animals, as I am doing here, is largely in the mind.  But I loved the rather hangdog expression worn by this Rook as it flies past.  What can it be thinking?  It looks an awful lot as though its attempt at a come back as prime minister has been rebuffed.  In reality it is probably nothing more than wondering where all its friends and relations have gone  - Rooks being very sociable creatures.
