The Scott Memorial

Memorials can either leave you cold or be intensely moving. This is the Scott Memorial in Devonport, Plymouth in the Autumn sunshine today. It commemorates Scott's ill-fated 1910-1913 Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole, from which he never returned. Scott was born in Plymouth, not far from the memorial. The story of Scott's expedition was re-told in the 1948 film Scott of the Antarctic. I find the memorial very moving not least because of the epic tale, but also because of the way Scott has been cast, and the position of the memorial in it's elevated position looking out across the sea.
