Wineries seem to multiply overnight around here, but Beltane is really special. It is the only wine club we belong to, not because their wine is exceptional but because it is such a delightful place to visit. It is not only a winery but a working ranch, in a setting that is both beautiful and peaceful.
Today was the pick-up event for the fall batch of wines. We were greeted at the gate next to the old truck (top left) given wine glasses and were invited to sample the new releases, try delicious pumpkin soup shooters and make S'mores over a big open fire in a huge hanging cauldron. Comfortable furniture was set out around the lawn and we sat in the sun and enjoyed watching various animals as they made appearances.

Top right is Wally the Wooley Weed Eater. He began life was a bummer lamb, rejected by his mother who couldn't deal with twins. He was hand raised by the resident shepherd and has been a part of various events ever since. He didn't seem the least bit bothered by the tutu or the unicorn headband. He must be about three by now and has been put to work with the rest of the flock keeping the weeds down in the vineyards..

The chickens were truly spectacular. They were called by one of the staff members and the stragglers were rounded up  by Frank, the Australian shepherd. I could have watched the chickens all afternoon as they pecked at the pumpkin, put out as a treat just for them. There were so many beautiful breeds, some, brahmas, cochins and faverolles with so many feathers on their feet and legs that they walked like a scuba diver wearing flippers! I had to settle for a picture of my favorite, a beautifully lacy brown cochin. She was quite territorial about 'her' pumpkin and worked quite hard keeping the others away.

Daisy, the horse came in carrying one of the staff kids dressed in a knight in quite a wonderful handmade costume with a silver cardboard helmet. The helmet prevented him from being able to see to guide Daisy so she was being led so she wouldn't step on any chickens or bump into the guests. I put them in extras as I forgot to put them into the collage.

There is something so peaceful about this place I could have sat sipping Sauvignon Blanc and watching the low key animal entertainment all day, but we reluctantly took our leave as we had to get home to half done laundry and other mundane tasks. The longhorn bull looking at us over the fence as we drove out the long driveway needed no costume. He comes equipped with quite an impressive set.
