Miajima

Catching up after a lovely holiday to Shikoku with TeaLuke

Today a beautiful day on Miajima island. The red gates are an iconic image of Japan, and now we got to see them for real! Luke (see link above) blipped what we both agreed was the less-often recorded, but actually preferable shot of them at low tide. It is supposed to be good luck to walk through them, and also to place a coin amongst the barnacles at the bottom. We were also joined at low tide by hundreds of holidaymakers dredging the sand for shellfish. Surreal juxtaposition.

To complement Luke's picture, here are the torii at high tide.
