DNA DL90

This is a sculpture by Abigail Fallis which consists of 22 shopping trolleys in the shape of a double helix. It was commissioned in 2003 by a supermarket chain on the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crick’s discovery of DNAs double helix structure. This is one of the many pieces of artwork on The Line..a trail which starts at the Olympic stadium in Stratford and finishes in North Greenwich. The extra is the well known ArcelorMittal  Orbit by Amish Kapoor very near the London Stadium.
The plan was for a group of us to go on the overground train from Richmond to Stratford then do the trail which includes going over the river on the Emirates cable car. Then back by Uber boat to Westminster for trains from Waterloo,  However things did not go to plan! Our ‘leader’ had done this before but quite a while ago and most of the signs seems to have disappeared plus there were several paths which had been cut off! The app was not very good and we had to keep making detours due to paths closed. Then one person got a puncture which took quite a while to sort a new inner tube etc. we decided that we would not be able to complete the trail before dark….so cycled to Canary Wharf and got the DLR ( I was amazed bikes were allowed but they are) to Bank. However at Bank there are no lifts and 2 very long escalators…we had no choice but to take our bikes on the escalators to get out of the station….I’m sure that’s not really allowed and definitely a first for me. Then a fairly quick cycle back to Waterloo only hampered by the vast number of tourists on Westminster bridge completely blocking the cycle lanes as well as the pavements! Fortunately I got on the train and found it very uncrowded at 4.30, presumably everyone went home early as it’s Friday?!

A bit of an adventure! I prefer things that I know will work time wise and allow for extra time for eg punctures. However it was a lovely sunny day and nice to see this group of friends.
