A Day Worth Recording

31 and Still Loopy

Drunter & Drüber - a German boardgame that won "Spiel des Jahres" (Game of the Year) back in 1991.  Known locally as the loo squashing game.

A gentle evening of games with C.  We'd talked about this game in the past but never played it with her, so that was the choice for 'something lighter' this evening.

The theme is a little weird (and/or Germanic humour, which may be the same thing).  The townsfolk of a small town have burnt down their town in order to rid it of a cat.  They then rebuilt all the buildings but omitted to build the infrastructure (sounds like a few places I can think of...).

The game sees players putting in the roads etc., demolishing the new buildings in the process.  The only building type that offers any resistance (in the form of a vote) are the loos.  The player with the most of their favourite (non-loo) buildings still standing is the winner.

The cat, meanwhile, is watching all this from a nearby field.

I believe "Drunter & Drüber" - literally Under and Over - is the German equivalent of haywire or topsyturvy in English.
