Cromdale Kirkyard

The watch house in Cromdale Kirkyard. The kirk (extra) is situated at an isolated site.on the bank of the Spey around a mile from the village. It is hard to envisage that such a peaceful spot would be troubled by Resurrectionists ( Bodysnatchers) but some of the gravestones are said to bear the scars of gunshot fired at Bodysnatchers from the Watch house.

In May 1690 a huge government force crossed the Spey close to the kirk on their way to mount an attack on Jacobite troops in what was to become the Battle of Cromdale. The Jacobites were surprised at dawn by a much stronger government force and were routed. The battle ended the 1689 Jacobite Rising.
