Mr Bojangles

The main square in Newport was very busy today. There was a long queue of people trying to get into a disused shop that was hosting a Christmas market. Outside the street was cordoned off and a stage had been erected.
A tap dancer started proceedings. I snapped him for my Blip and the ‘Mr Bojangles’ song came into my head. I checked the origins and discovered the songwriter had met a homeless main in a New Orleans jail. The man entertained his fellow inmates with a tap dance. He had used the pseudonym when arrested. Bill Bojangles Robinson had been an entertainer during the 1930/40’s.
