MULLET RIVER IN WINTER

Getting pretty cold around here, although today is relatively warm, but ice is forming and only movement of the river keeps it from freezing across. In the depths of winter, in about 2 months, only patches of open water will be seen and there will certainly be ducks there, mallards mostly, eating submerged water plants and invertebrates.

Nice trout stream with brown trout (Salmo trutta) predominating. It's on this river that I did 7 years of work for my first Master's Degree. Before automated devices were invented, I visited this river in three places twice a day EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR to record water temperatures and do water chemistry analysis. In addition, benthic samples were taken weekly to determine species and population numbers of various aquatic invertebrates.

It was determined, initially, that some shallow sections of the river were limited in habitat for trout, especially places to hide from predators.  Half-log devices were installed to increase habitat availability and pre-post sampling was done to determine success of those devices.  I also mapped the study area (1/2 mile as the crow flies....longer with all the bends), using a plane table & alidade protocol.

LET'S SEE HOW OBSERVANT YOU ARE.  WHICH WAY IS THE WATER FLOWING.....LEFT TO RIGHT OR RIGHT TO LEFT?

P.S. I know there are some wise-guys out there who will say it's flowing downhill.  HA!
