GOT WOOD?

It's Silly Saturday and there's not much more silly than enjoying a tasty mouthful of willow branches.

The zoo in Milwaukee is doing some seasonal maintenance by trimming off branches of Weeping Willow (Salix babylonica) to save time in the Spring.

What to do with the excess trimmings? Feed it to the African Elephants (Loxodonta africanus) of course.  They thrive on eating wood...it's what they do during the dry season in Africa. But they're not stupid...they gotta do what they gotta do to survive right? But they won't turn down some tasty grass, dry or otherwise.

================================
I recall seeing some elephants in a Florida zoo during Christmas break a while back. It was Christmas treat time and they were fed watermelons.....whole.  NO.......elephants are not stupid enough to try to swallow one whole but they stomp it with their feet and it explodes into mouth-sized pieces which are quickly picked up with their trunk and chewed, rind and all.  Hey....if you can eat willow wood, watermelon rind is not much of an issue.

P.S.   When does an elephant use his trunk?  When his suitcase just won't do!    ROFL!
