Midmar Recumbent Stone Circle

Around 10% of the total number of stone circles recorded in Britain can be found in Aberdeenshire. These circles have their own unique style of circle: the Recumbent Stone Circle. The diameters of these vary from 11 metres to 26 metres.

The distinctive feature of these Recumbent Stone circles is a massive stone laid horizontally on its side in the Southwestern or Southern Arc of the circle. These are flanked by the two tallest stones of the circle.

The recumbent stones have an average weight of 24 tons and were set horizontally.

Midmar stone circle was surrounded by Midmar Kirk and Cemetry in the 19th Century.

Part of the attraction in visiting the circles is the travel through the wonderful countryside on a bright day.
