"MOMENTO MATREM'...

...This is a Garden Cemetery near the Old Mildura Homestead, not far from us, which was lovingly restored in 1998 by one of the great grand daughters descended from the Chaffey Family - who came from Canada and who had great insight into this district.

The cemetery pays homage to all the Women of the region whose contribution to Society must not be forgotten...

The "Rio Vista" home I've blipped previously, and the Fountain which stands in front of it is where these women, and children once lived, with William Chaffey - the first wife died tragically from pneumonia after the birth of their 6th child, and the baby died shortly afterwards and then he travelled to Candada and returned with her niece as his second wife. One of the children was drowned in the original Fountain and lies here as well..

And so - here is the cemetery where only the Women and Children lie peacefully near the river Murray, amongst the scrub of pretty native trees and quangdong trees as well, and surrounded by lots of birds and even little blue wrens we are told...

"Momento Matrem" - asks us to - "Remember The Mother"
