Darkness, showing off the Light

At this time of year you hear a lot about darkness. It may be literal, that it is dark a lot of the time and how to change that, or metaphorical, in which case darkness seems to represent evil, and light represent goodness.  In either case darkness is not considered good!
I've never understood this. Darkness has a beauty all of its own. It's only in the dark you can really appreciate the stars, or the moon.  I photographed the bridge and reflection because I thought them so beautiful, shining out in the darkness. But the same picture taken in daylight would be an okay image, but nothing special.
