Ruaha is one of the most interesting safari destinations I’ve had the privilege to visit. Its rocky undulating landscape, green after a few weeks of rain, is beautiful.

There is also an abundance of wildlife. The guide, Innocent, was full of interesting facts and tips on animal identification, some of which I had never heard. For example, I didn’t know impala groom each other with their loose-fitting teeth that act like a comb, removing ticks and accounting for their very sleek appearance. I also wasn’t aware that glands on the faces of giraffes secrete a substance that repels flies, accounting for the much less insect-ravaged head of a giraffe when compared to other mammals.

Today we clocked up some additional species not seen yesterday, such as kudu, eland and rock hyrax, before bidding a fond farewell to Ruaha and driving back to Iringa.
