Gadwall

To the hospital this afternoon to pick up a prescription for J. Whilst there I had a short walk along the nearby Sankey Canal.

The image is a drake Gadwall. They are easily overlooked dabbling ducks as they do not have showy plumage. I like the subtleties of the browns and greys, which are only apparent on close inspection. A few breed in the UK, but their numbers are swelled in winter with the arrival of birds from the continent.
