Skating on Thin Ice

We went to our local pond today. It can usually be guaranteed to have a good selection of birds. However today the pond was totally frozen. The few birds that made any effort on it, skated forlornly across the thick ice, occasionally finding a hole in the ice into which they could drop thankfully and float around as they should.

In this shot, the birds appear to be standing in very shallow water but I am fairly sure that it is quite deep here and think they must be standing on some ice just below the surface. It certainly creates some lovely reflections in the water.
