A Day Worth Recording

Pushed

This week has been a sad one for those of us bothered about the ethical sourcing of our purchases.   Traidcraft, the company that, back in the 1970s, pioneered Fair Trade - enabling the producers to get a fair share of the money their crops produced - is going into administration.

A combination of the pervasive issues we all know about, plus the post office strikes before Christmas and customers being wary of relying on postal deliveries for Christmas orders, proved to be the final nail in the coffin of a mid-sized independent, innovative supplier.

It's probable that strategic mistakes were made years ago but there's no point worrying about that now.

It could be said that, given that all the big supermarkets have picked up on Fair Trade products that 'its job is done'.  That's going to be partly true, but workers are still being exploited, so there is still much more to do.

The charity arm, Transform Trade, remains in full operation.

This jolly Traidcraft mug, now a bit faded, is one of my favourites.
