Snowdrops

Last night we met Tommy and Inca at a Peruvian restaurant for a quick pre-theatre dinner, before going to see Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons (yes there are five lemons!!) at the Harold Pinter Theatre. It has had mixed reviews and while we all agreed that the cast were excellent, the plot had some flaws. Aidan Turner proved to be a very competent actor, and much more than the pretty boy from Poldark, and Jenna Coleman was terrific. But the premise of the play, that a draconian law was introduced whereby you could only say 140 words per day (why? it was never explained) seemed a bit pointless. It had a very ambiguous ending, which I enjoyed, and meant that all the way home we discussed our interpretation of it, so in a way the play was a success as it got us thinking about so many things.

Gavin disliked the play, but possibly because the whole experience for him was ruined by a man sitting directly behind us who coughed and spluttered and snorted all the way through the performance, he was obviously full to the brim with flu (or even Covid? heaven forbid!) and had no regard for the people sitting around him the way he generously shared his disgusting germs. When the play ended and we stood up, I was surprised when Gavin leaned over and told him he should not be going out in public in his condition and if he was selfish enough to do so he should at least wear a mask. By now Tommy and Inca were dying with embarrassment that Gavin had said something, but the man spluttered a weak defence and then said 'fair point'. Since Covid the etiquette is that you do not mix in public when you are obviously so full of a virus of any kind! How do people not know that yet?

Today was beautifully sunny, a really lovely day that gives you hope that spring really is on the way. The snowdrops are out and I was happy to spot some on our walk with Xena. Tommy and Inca made a brunch for us - see extra of Tommy cooking - and then Gavin drove* them into London where they were meeting a friend before getting the train back to Cambridge (*no trains running from around here today)

Tonight I will be in front of the TV by 9pm to watch the final episode of Happy Valley. Such a quality TV drama, this third and final season has had the nation glued to their TV sets and tonight sees the final showdown between the indomitable Sargeant Cawood and the evil psychopath Tommy Lee Royce. Only one will survive, who will it be?
