Elephant tree

This weird-looking tree is fairly common where we're staying in Baja California, but we didn't notice any in Arizona. I think it looks as if the tree's been pulled up by its roots and stuck back in the ground the wrong way up. The thick trunk is used to store water and like many desert plants it is drought-deciduous, ie losing its leaves during drought. It turns out to be virtually confined to Baja California, explaining why we didn't see them before now.

This one was at the base of Table Mountain, which is really just a hill about 200 m high. We made it to the top and had a great view of the bay, but it was seriously hot up there.
