The Wren

A glorious day and i needed a quick early walk as I was invigilating an exam in the afternoon. I explored a different area on the moor to the usual pathway and came across a carcass of a tree which had fallen a long time ago and had just been left to decay thereby giving life to other creatures. As I walked towards it I noticed something small and shiny. On further examination it was a bird's egg which had been broken into but the yolk was still almost intact. It wasn't underneath a tree and so hadn't been pushed out or fallen out and it looked as if it had been carefully placed there by a predator - the white bird poo beside it is probably testament to that. I did wonder why it had been abandoned though and left uneaten .... You can see just to the right of the shell some tiny, tiny red flowers from - I think - some form of miniature lichen. I posted this in my blipfolio to show you the egg in context and how tiny it was. The area it is sitting on could easily be taken for a table by a visiting bird!
