Gloucester

Three friendly blippers have responded to our recent plea for additional photos to represent the locations mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and available as a podcast series). This means that our pipeline of content to blip has been replenished again - hurrah!

Colstro sent us this shot of Gloucester cathedral to represent Gloucester. Thank you!

Lorna mentions Gloucester three times in her war diary, all of which relate to her (ultimately unsuccessful) medical treatment:

1. On 29th September 1939 Lorna wrote ‘I went to Gloucester to the Infirmary and am to go again on November 24th. Report is favourable on the whole, although I have more pain than has been usual for a long time’. (Episode 1 of the podcast series.)
2. In her diary entry for 29th January 1940 she said that she spent the previous two weeks in the Gloucester Infirmary for X-ray treatment. (Episode 4 of the podcast series.)
3.  On 8th May 1940 Lorna reported a busy day which included ‘getting off from Gloucester’. (Episode 5 of the podcast series.)

There are also some scribbles that refer to various hospital appointments in 1939 on the inside back cover of Lorna's exercise book.

If you followed the LornaL journal between 31st August 2019 and 11th January 2021, you will also know that Gloucester was the home of Lorna's Uncle Percy, Aunt May, and Cousin Diana. It is appropriate that our Gloucester photograph in this journal is of the cathedral given Diana's wartime fire-watching on its rooftops, and Uncle Percy's role of Diocesan Registrar between 1932 and 1957.

The list of the locations that we are still seeking is given below. If you have a suitable shot - either of a place(s), or something that could represent it (them) - please send your contribution(s) (not previously blipped) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk to feature alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. As soon as we receive your picture(s), we'll remove the location(s) from the list. Thank you!
