HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

I spent the day at the State Super Regional Wrestling tournament in a town about an hour north of my abode. The wrestler with the white & black singlet is from a town near my home and I was shooting several schools for the local papers, his among them..

Wrestlers of all sizes are grouped into weight classes and they wrestle only individuals within their weight class. In pounds, the weight classes are 106-113-120-126-132-138-145-152-160-170-195-220-285 (to get kilos, just divide each weight by 2.2).  The weight listed reflects the maximum weight allowed to be in that class. They can add 2 pounds to each weight class by mid-season to allow for growth of the individual with time and they get another pound when the tournaments start, i.e. a 106# wrestler may weight up to 109 pounds during the tournament; 113# wrestler may weigh up to 116#, etc.

If a wrestler picks up his opponent and returns him to the mat in order to gain control, he is responsible for returning him in a safe manner.  No slamming is allowed.....if the referee believes that the lift and return was of a nature to cause injury, he will penalize the offending wrestler by giving points to his opponent.  If it happens twice in a match, the offending wrestler is removed from competition. If he should injure his opponent and the opponent cannot continue the match, the offending wrestler loses the match and team points.

Those advancing from this tournament meet the following week for another match with other Regional winners.  Those surviving the Sectional tournament, meet the next week for the State Tournament Finals in the capitol City of Madison which determines the top wrestlers in the state for each weight class.

High school and college wrestling is NOTHING AT ALL like WWF Professional wrestling...that is not really wrestling, it's an exhibition by professional athletes. They are specially trained to know how to fall and not get hurt.

EXTRA:  Converted to B&W.  I'm curious which format you like best.  Best viewed in Large.
