At Scalby: wild bramble crumble x

My dad Freddie is partial to a bit of foraging in his spare time. If he is not on his knees on the moors gathering wild blue berries, you instead might find him raiding a local crab apple tree for his 'crab apple jelly'.

The latest delicacy, a wild bramble crumble. Crafted together by my mum, but all and more of 20lb of the brambles collected by dad last september were actually destined for his own use. Dad loves to eat frozen berries straight from the 'freezer with honey and a little water'

Mum finding his stash of berries has been busy and we weren't the only people who got a taste. "You see people pooh-pooh my idea of eating wild brambles, but now they all dive in!"says dad. He has never cooked them before himself, but insisted the taste comes from picking berries that grow in the "long evening sun". He claims that these brambles have "a certain piquancy" (that is to you and I, that they zing your tongue and make you smile!)

The crumble, delicious.... Sweet and zingy! X
