Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Archie went off out with Elizabeth, so we went into town for lunch. Actually, yesterday we tried to book two places. Full up. Third one lucky. Fishers in the City, a place we haven’t been to for years. It’s an Edinburgh institution, with another branch on the harbour in Leith. They specialise in seafood.

Despite my better judgement, I chose traditional fish and chips (JR had a curry). It’s always far too much, but I managed, and regretted it ever since.

It was VERY Noisy - everybody was LOUD, which is marginally better than just one person being loud. I think they were all shouting over the MUZAK. A woman came and stood by our table, looking at us. We then realised who she was - we’d met her on the cruise. In fact we’d had many evenings in the jazz bar with her and her mum. Mum then waved at us from a table across the room. We went over for a chat before we left. Great to catch up with them. Mum has just been on another cruise. But the daughter had terrible news. Her husband had died suddenly on New Year’s Day, aged 51. Just as well you can’t see into the future…

We popped in to a wee shop next door, where JR bought a new jumper (it was on sale), then I was ready for a coffee at Prêt before catching the bus home.

Watched Bettany Hughes, on her Treasures of the World programme She was in Ephesus tonight. I was there many moons ago, in the 70s when me and my two pals travelled overland from New Zealand. I’m ashamed to say that we did not take much notice, and indeed weren’t overly impressed. (OH NO! MORE RUINS!) It would have been great to have had (a) Bettany Hughes with us…

Another two litres of water consumed today. No improvements…
