Arrow...

………………....…..…..Rock, Nelson, NZ

When Arthur Wakefield's ship "Arrow" sailed into Nelson Haven on the 1st November, 1841, through the narrow channel between the Rock and Haulashore Island, the Rock was then named "Arrow Rock” (the local Maori call it Urenui), but when the immigrant ship "Fifeshire" was leaving  port on the 27th February, 1842, she was wrecked on the rock - the rock then became known as Fifeshire Rock by locals.

The narrow channel between the Rock and Haulashore Island made the navigation of the port extremely hazardous, and a number of vessels were either stranded or wrecked.

A new and safer entrance to Nelson Harbour was opened on 30th July, 1906.

This was edited in Snapseed to give the day a more dramatic appearance. Otherwise it was a gentle autumn day, coolish when we woke and mid 20C as the day warmed.

Many thanks for your response to yesterday’s featured ‘lovebirds’. It was the first time I had seen nature’s mating game for these beautiful butterflies. It was quite amazing seeing the male carrying the female in flight as part of the ritual.
