Blotchy

My favourite sight in the early spring woods: the rosette of mottled leaves that signals the advent of an early purple orchid.

The colouration is produced by anthocyanins, the same  pigment that creates the purple potatoes I blipped a few days ago.

It was a wet afternoon so a wander in the woods was the best option for Raki, who can follow scent trails to her heart's content,  while I log the early signs of spring. Dog's mercury (no relation!) is first up as usual but I also spotted a few sodden wood sorrel and wood anemone flowers. We returned home dripping but satisfied.
