James Watt, Artist

Scottish Maritime Museum

On 14th June, the Scottish Maritime Museum will be officially re-opening after significant refurbishment. Today I got a preview when discussing the initiative with the education officer there. The work goes on - lots of people all working very hard - as the preparations for the opening continue.

It's going to be excellent, and a great venue for school field trips. As well as the extensive indoor museum, there are also various vessels in the river. Pupils will be able to board a puffer, the Spartan, which was used in Para Handy and in its remake. They'll also be able to board the steamship Kyles.

Just along from those two are another two vessels, the tug, Garnock in the foreground here, and City of Adelaide, in the background.

For pupils, working in the style of James Watt, it'd be a great field trip, with painting possible in the peace of Irvine harbour, and that's what I've been exploring today. The work the pupils produce should be very varied. There were lots of shots and perspectives to choose from today.

Definitely a perk of the job.
