The Hammils

Out for a walk in the glorious sunshine today and came past the Hammils. This is a series of rocks which form a small waterfall on the White Cart as it comes into Paisley. The large building is a former cotton mill and I took the photograph from the side of a water powered corn mill which was still working into the second half of the twentieth century.

The Hammils are why people settled in the area since they could not get any further up the Cart and spread out over the flat fertile land beside the river. It was agricultural until the 18th century when the industrial revolution brought factories and the incumbent social changes.
