Chacabuco

We arrived this afternoon in the delightful little port of Chacabuco in beautiful balmy sunshine and autumnal breezes. A cruise ship was lolling in the bay but we saw no passengers disembark.

We are overnighting here and then at 7 am tomorrow morning going on a catamaran which will take us to the San Rafael Glacier. This is one of the major outlet glaciers of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field in southern Chile and is the tidewater glacier nearest the equator. It calves ice into the San Rafael Lagoon.  The forecast for tomorrow is a bit dull and rainy here in Chacabuco port but with the micro climate in Patagonia anything is possible by the time we get to the lagoon. It will take about 5 hours by catamaran to reach the San Rafael Lagoon. So it’ll be an early one tonight!
