The River Rhine

…in a two-section map by Justus Danckerts, a hand-coloured copper engraving from around 1680. The scale is approximately 1:930,000.

A wet and windy day encouraged me to carry on to explore my inherited atlas.

In the depicted map, the Rhine starts its course on top left in the Alps, includes the Lake Konstanz (Bodensee), changes from the upper section at Mainz and takes its way to the Netherlands on bottom right. Note the mythological figures in the cartouches.
