The humbugs have arrived! Great Crested Grebe #19

After an unsuccessful trip to Tesco this morning, I was feeling a bit grumpy and hubby suggested a drive over to Phoenix Park to check out the Great Crested Grebe pair. There were some ominous clouds around, but we hopped over there anyway - it's not far from the car should we need to make a run for it.
Last time we were there on the 14th March, the pair had made a nest and laid one egg so we were hopeful that said egg would have hatched.
Mum(we assume) was still on the nest and as we stood and watched, we could see a little humbug poking out from under the feathers on her back - so cute. It can't be more than a couple of days old as it was tiny. Mr GCG swam up to say hello and Mum stood up - we could see at least another couple of eggs, maybe three and even more exciting, was a second chick emerging from its egg - see extras.  She adjusted herself, narrowly avoided standing on the chick and then sat back down facing away from us.
At that point the rain started and we made a hasty retreat towards the car, but it stopped almost as soon as it had started - we didn't even reach the car so continued around the lake, saw the swans on their nest and ended up back at the GCG nest. There were lots of small children about screaming and playing, and as we didn't want to draw too much attention to the nest we moved away for a few minutes until they'd gone and then went back to see if we could see the little humbug on her back again - it popped out on cue and promptly fell off her back onto the side of the nest. After righting itself it was comical to watch it try and clamour back up onto her back - eventually it made it.
As it reached the top, Dad came back with a tiny fish and another humbug popped out!!! We were delighted to see what we assume was the newly hatched chick, on her back as well and looking well. There was certainly only one chick earlier when we were watching.
What an absolute delight to witness such scenes. If the weather is kind we may be able to take another look later in the week before we go away.
