Best

A photo of a photo that is from my seventh birthday party, me and my best pal Rachel. I framed it and gave it to her at her 30th.. 24 years ago.
And now, she’s home from hospital, but for how long? She’s stranded up in her bedroom as cannot manage the stairs and can’t see out the dormer windows, so no view but the sky, it’s all quite grim. We sit and wait to see if eight weeks of radio have helped shrink the tumour that’s wrapped round her brain stem. It’s not looking good as just this week she’s lost her hearing and she was oh so tired today, lasting 20 minutes at a time then conking out. She’s also recovering from a total bowel resection so it’s difficult to know what is causing her symptoms. We sat and reminisced til she faded, then I sat downstairs with her dad til she woke up. Up and down over the course of the day.
Her dad is the most broadly intelligent funny eccentric man who fortunately lives just next door. An ex Glasgow Uni lecturer, he regaled me on economics, astronomy and how to bake the best victoria sponge. Lovely man, who lost his twin at Christmas and now going thru all this yet hilarious all day. Rachel’s husband is his match, an ex Catholic priest ( he discovered women and quit ;) ) with the widest life story and remains fascinated with life. Despite all the challenges he’s now teaching himself physics and tried to teach me electromagnetism. Failed!

So a day of memories, and sadness, random lessons and lots of laughter.
Cherish whilst we can
