Forest of Compiègne

This statue of World War I French military leader, and Allied supreme commander, Marshal Ferdinand Foch, is found in the Glade of Armistice in the Forest of Compiègne, France. We have posted it here because Lorna Lloyd mentions Hitler's 'melodramatic performance' in front of the statue on 21st June 1940 in her war diary entry of August 3rd 1940. The details of Hitler's 'performance' are summarised in the Wikipedia entry about the Glade of Armistice.

One of the guests who attended the launch of the podcast series of the Diary of War on May 24th 2022 supplied this picture for our online photo album of places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal). Although the photograph looks much older, she took it in colour in the 1980s. We saved it in monochrome so that the carving can be seen at the base of the statue.
