Silesia

When we started this project to create a blipper-sourced online photo album of places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal), we knew that some locations would be more difficult to capture than others. For this reason, we have bent our rules a little for such locations, asking blippers to send photos that can represent them (rather than are literally of them) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk. See, for example, this journal's entries for DakarChadMafekingRomagna the River Marne.

One of these tricky locations is Silesia, mentioned by Lorna in her first diary entry on 1st September 1939, and featured in Episode 1 of our podcast series. The shot blipped here was snapped by Platform to Platform project team member hazelh. It's a frame from the start of the film Mr Jones (which hazelh recommends).

Once again our pipeline of photos for this journal has run dry.  Can you help out by sending a shot (or shots) for any of the places listed below (not previously blipped)?  If so, please do get in touch with h.hall@napier.ac.uk. Then we can feature it/them alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. Thank you!

Albania: Durrës (Durazzo)*
Egypt: Sidi Barrani**
England (2): Coventry; Leigh, Gloucestershire
France: Bailleul***
Finland (2): Hanko (Hangö)****; Mannerheim Line
Germany: Heligoland*****
Greece: Thermopylae
Italy: Taranto
Russia (3): Karelian Isthmus; Petsamo province (part of Finland until 1944); Vyborg (Viipuri in Finland until 1944)

* There is a restaurant with this name in London N8.
** Sidi Barrani is named on some war memorials. For example, a blipper in or near Lichfield could photograph this one for us.
*** Bailleul is in the Somme department. A shot from a visit to the wider area would be useful here.
**** Perhaps a Finnish blipper could help out with this location in the south of Finland?
***** Also the name of a 2010 Massive Attack album - check the record collections of your friends and family!
