Mafeking

We thought that we might struggle to find a photograph of Mafeking (now Mafikeng) when we first started our game of blipper bingo to create a photo album of locations mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series). Then pandammonium offered to source a street sign in Sunderland that could represent this place in South Africa - and here it is! Thank you pandammonium

Lorna references Mafeking figuratively in her war diary entry of November 11th 1939, as covered in Episode 3 of our podcast series

Lorna may have known more than most about the siege and relief of the town in 1899/1900 because her father Bertie served in the Second Boer War. If you check the entry on the LornaL journal for 16th June 2020, you can read about Bertie's experience as a soldier in South Africa at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

This contribution to our journal demonstrates that we do not necessarily need blipper contributions to this journal that are literally of the places listed below. As well as this street sign for Mafeking, you'll see that we have represented the River Marne in a paintingDakar in a shot that incorporated screen shots of a web page and the television during the World Cup finals and Chad in a map brought back from the country as a tourist souvenir

If you have a suitable shot for this journal - either of a place(s), or something that could represent it (them) - please send your contribution(s) (not previously blipped) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk to feature alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. Thank you!
