Siegfried Line

In the past few days we have received a flurry of three new contributions to our blipper-sourced photo album of locations mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series). This means that three more places have been removed from our list below.

The first of the three is the Siegfried Line. This is represented in this shot of Trier Cathedral. The city of Trier is located on the River Mosel very close to Germany’s western border with Luxembourg, and 48km downriver from Schengen, where the borders of France, Germany and Luxembourg intersect. We thank (again) iaint for this generous contribution to the LornaLPodcast journal. With his photograph, iaint also sent us some further information about the Siegfried Line and the importance of Trier:

'The Siegfried Line (Westwall in German) was a defensive line of fortifications built by Nazi Germany during the 1930s stretching from the border with the Netherlands in the north, along the western border of Nazi Germany as far as Switzerland. It comprised more than 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and tank traps.

Between September 1944 to March 1945 Trier was the target of a major attack by the Allied forces. As such it was one of the cities protected by the Westwall. It was heavily bombed and bombarded during 1944, and is located close to the areas affected by the “Battle of the Bulge” during 1944.'

Lorna refers to the Siegfried Line once in her war diary, on September 7th 1939. This mention can be heard in Episode 1 of our podcast series.

While we have your attention, please could you check our list of missing locations and consider whether you might be able to help us to blip the full set? The contributions do not necessarily need to be literally of a place listed: see, for instance, our photographs for the River MarneDakar and Chad

If you have a suitable shot - either of a place(s), or something that could represent it (them) - please send your contribution(s) (not previously blipped) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk to feature alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022
