Stone: Walls, Towers, Gates

We walked up to the medieval town of Narni today. It was raining and my rain suit was less than glamorous. There was a brief period of blue sky and puffy white clouds perfectly timed as we entered the town walls. We took the subterranean tour of Narnia….discovered in the 70’s by some ‘young spelunkers’ and a gardener. The tour reveals layers of history that has been buried…medieval church, convent, torture chamber, cistern. It was an interesting tour BUT the guide spoke speedy Italian, leaving us quite clueless and it was dark so we couldn’t read the meager english guide AND no photos were allowed. AND there was no picture guidebook to purchase. Hence the experience is already dimming. I think the guide relished speaking faster than normal just because she could. The two Belgians in the group looked rather clueless as well. Thus we are ever more appreciative of the Italians that speak in a manner that we can understand!
