Flow

Heading into Flow Country, by way of Strath Kildonan up from Helmsdale.  This area, like many elsewhere in Scotland, was forcibly cleared in the early C19th and Helmsdale's museum told a little of the story. It was more focused on the once thriving herring industry though, a familiar story of boom and bust.

We had a quick look in at the RSPB centre at Forsinard Flow but it really wasn't the weather or place for striding out and attempting to see anything; the flora is still thinking about emerging and no right minded bird will be showing off today!

However, the vast open peat moors were beautiful and we were glad to have sacrificed a projected scoff at a good watering hole for the wander up the strath.

Dounreay Power Station looked very tired with rust evident on its famous white globe. It's being decommissioned and looks it.  The views are generally grey although Berry and I had a glimmer of sparkle whilst walking (or pelting around, in her case) on Dunnet Sands. She has kindly brought quite a bit of beach back into the motorhome as a memento.

In just a few more minutes we'll be getting going for the final hop to the ferry. Back to the old 'Pentalina' boat so it'll be like old times!
