Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Fire walking

Wintery weather  has returned this morning, a good excuse to once again rekindle memories of our time in Fiji.
The Fijians, particularly those  living on the island of Beqa, are famous for their practice of walking on red hot stones. This illustration of the ceremony on Beqa is a drawing from the Illustrated London News published January 9th, 1904. The original is black and white but I have "warmed up" the stones!
Fiji is also home to a large population of people whose ancestors came from India. Coincidently, they too have a tradition of fire-walking, but across hot wood embers rather than hot stones. I blipped a photograph of their ceremony some time ago. You can see it here.
