Penguins ahoy!

It’s World Penguin Day today but last week when we were on holiday it turned into Penguin Week for us. We were contacted by Birdland’s agency and also another South West media agency for our photos of Spike, a king penguin at Birdland with 16k facebook followers who has featured in advertising and has met David Attenborough. Spike had been entered into the Penguins International “March of the Penguins Madness” competition for the favourite zoo penguin. Penguins International is a non profit organisation committed to preserving and protecting penguins. Once Spike got to the last two penguins the media got hold of it and I am pleased to say our photos were used by the BBC, ITV and countless regional sites and publications. Sometimes we were given credit and other times Birdland were given credit, which is fine, as we allow them to use our photos.
A few media outlets went to film him but poor Spike is moulting at the moment and so was a bit camera shy. Luckily we have quite a few shots that could be used. The winner was announced on “The One Show” and was Spike! He won by a narrow margin of 1%! The whole point of the competition was for Penguins International to raise awareness of things like reducing single use plastics and choosing sustainable seafood and I’m sure they’ve got a whole lot more followers as a result of the competition and Spike has certainly got a lot of attention. He's to the right of the front penguin in this shot.
