Monte Cofano Nature Reserve

Monte Cofano Nature Reserve is just up the coast from Trapani. We hiked around Monte Cofano (pictured). An all day hike that took us down a steep trail to the sea. Slipping and sliding on the loose rubble rock was like walking on marbles…which was in fact, marble! It was a photogenic day, so 4 extra photos for your viewing pleasure! The trail along the Tyrrhenian Sea went past an old tonnara (squarish building) which doubled as a fortress. The tuna fishing industry was/is big here. A tonnara was used by fishermen to spot schools of tuna. As we completed our circumnavigation of Monte Cofano, we crossed paths with a marble quarry…reminding us that we were indeed walking on marble!
