Devil’s Bridge

Legend says the devil made a deal with the builder of the bridge trading the soul of the first who crossed the bridge in exchange for helping to complete the project on time (death or torture was likely if it wasn’t done on schedule). Once finished, the clever builder tricked a dog to cross the bridge first, mocking the devil. Hence, the nickname. “Devil’s Bridge” is a remarkable example of medieval engineering, which Countess Matilda of Lucca commissioned to be built in the 14th century. Today’s theme was crossing bridges…we took the train and hiked to several notable bridges, starting with this medieval stone bridge, then on to a 19th century ‘Chain Bridge” designed by Nottolini, and the last a early 20th century Railroad bridge.
