Yankee Jack

"John Short (‘Yankee Jack’) came into prominence as ‘father’ of sea shanties. Born locally in 1839, he first went to sea from Watchet as a lad before going ‘deep sea’ and in the 1860’s joined a Yankee ship in the American Civil War. It is said he sang as he sailed with a most melodious voice and when he retired at the age of 61 he brought his songs home with him. These were collected and collated by Cecil Sharp* and Sir Richard Terry for our English musical heritage. A statue of ‘Yankee Jack’ was funded by the Museum Society and public subscription and sculpted by Alan B. Herriot, of Penicuik, Scotland."

Norm was still feeling rough so I popped out into the town and had a wander round between rain showers. Went up on to the cliffs and walked to the fossil beach and then called for takeaway coffees to take back.

Worked on my cross stitch and junk journal in the afternoon while it hammered down outside. It came nice later and Norm was feeling a bit better so we popped out for a little drive and a pint outside The White Horse at Washford. Called for a chippy tea on the way back and watched some of the Seniors' Snooker. The draw means that potentially Jimmy White could meet Tony Drago in the semi-finals, which would be ace!

Started watching Magpie Murders when I went to bed and didn't have a clue what was going on until I realised I was actually watching the final episode. So I sort of know what's going to happen now - what a buffoon! When I realised my mistake (about half way through!) stopped and watched the first episode. Enjoyed it, Lesley Manville is just brilliant in everything :-)

Nearly finished my junk journal, just got ephemera, pockets etc. to add. Made a little reel here.

*Managed to find a download of this book so might try to learn a couple of his chanteys on the uke... poor Norm, like he's not suffering enough!
