The Guernsey Telephone Wars broke out this week in 1896, when the National Telephone Company started erecting poles and wires to connect properties in St Peter Port. However, while the company had the monopoly on phone services on the mainland, it didn't have any right to provide the same in Guernsey. the States gave it notice to remove its equipment and, when it didn't comply, the States pulled it down itself. Guernsey's own phone system finally went into operation two years later.”
