Beelitz Sanitariums

Today we visited Baum und Zeit, which is the home of the derelict Beelitz Sanitoriums. They are the remains of what was the largest tuberculosis sanitoriums in Germany set in attractive woodland grounds well out of the city of Berlin in whar were regarded as healthy and recuperative environment. They were built for the workers of the city rather than the wealthy who could afford to pay for health care. After the war they were taken over by the Russians who continued to use it as a sanitarium. After the reunification of East and West Germany they fell into disuse and gradually crumbled away with surrounding woodland regaining a foothold when the roofs caved in. They have been reclaimed as a historical site and a tree tops walkway added to give overhead views of the site. Guided toors are given of the sanitoriums.
