MAKING A SILK PURSE OUT OF A SOW'S EAR

Like much of North America, Road America, America's National Park of Speed, has been losing all sorts of trees to the Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis).
~
"The emerald ash borer, also known by the acronym EAB, is a green buprestid or jewel beetle native to north-eastern Asia that feeds on ash species. Females lay eggs in bark crevices on ash trees, and larvae feed underneath the bark of ash trees to emerge as adults in one to two years." (Wiki)

They likely arrived in the United States hidden in wood packing materials.

Rather than just chop down the dead trees, they are trimmed and, with the help of a very talented chain saw artist, who happens to be the track's arborist, the stumps are turned into art pieces to grace the natural area.  While shooting the World Racing League event today, I discovered this new carving at the Corvette Corral...a place for Corvette owners to gather and park their vehicles together.   It's a Corvette logo and a small Corvette chainsawed into the top branch.

I've added a couple of Extra samples of the artist's work.  Imagine doing this with a chainsaw!
