Hummingbird Wars

We went back to the Quetzals again this morning and after 2 hours and many visits to the nest by the male, the light was good enough for a really nice shot.  Although similar to yesterday's shot, I have loaded another one into extra.

We spent the afternoon shooting hummingbirds, first out on the deck and later in a more studio like setting but still outdoors and completely at the mercy of the hummers.

The Fiery-Throated Hummingbird sitting on the flower was an incredible bully.  Much to our dismay, he spent the longest time chasing away any other hummingbird that came near it, vocalizing with incessant chatter the entire time.  The antics were quite entertaining.  The hummingbird on the left is a Talamanca hummingbird.  Costa Rica has 53 different kinds of hummingbirds spread throughout the country.  We hardly saw any of the Fiery-throated species the last time we were here and this time they are everywhere.

Be sure to have a look in Large.
