Woolwich Dock

I drove a friend to a medical appointment in Sydney today so to kill some time I explored Woolwich, a very leafy, upmarket and historical suburb on the northern side of the harbour opposite Cockatoo Island.
Woolwich Dock was constructed in 1898 and while not old by world standards has played a significant part in Australia’s maritime history. It’s a dry dock , originally for the maintenance and repair of large ships but now more for recreational craft and super yachts. It’s 260m long and required the excavation of 85,000 cubic metres of Hawkesbury sandstone (that’s quite a few ute loads for my Isuzu DMax).
For many decades it was the biggest dry dock in Australia.
