Emma

I had to miss another of the boys' cricket matches in more stunning spring weather, this time because of a workshop on the whole fraught business of getting published as a writer and trying to get an agent. It was an internal event for the Leeds Writers Circle, run by member Sunyi Dean, who after many years of struggle and dealing with rejections, got her third novel, The Book Eaters, picked up in a three book deal. It's become a huge success. We learned so much, not least how the odds are stacked against any of us breaking into this business. Sunyi opened our eyes to the necessity of playing the game in the right way. There are rules and it's much harder if you don't follow them. Lots of little tips and learning the lingo. We picked her brain for almost four hours. It was incredibly helpful.

A quick dash for the train home offered little time for street photography. I couldn't resist stopping Emma for a portrait. If you think this headshot is colourful, you should have seen the rest of her, especially her boots. I tried to get a wider angle but it proved impossible on a busy street. Leeds was bustling.
