Pond Life

The date to spend the day with friends on their narrow boat 'Pond Life' was booked weeks ago. We thought a day cruising along the canals at the end of May would be idyllic. Instead we were wrapped in waterproof gear and rain hats under dark skies. Cold rain fell incessantly. The plan was to tackle a flight of locks, have a picnic lunch and then go back though the locks. It was decided that working the locks in the rain would be no fun at all so we went down a spur of the Grand Union, moored up for lunch and then went back again. Normous took the helm for most of the trip and had a thoroughly good day.

I blipped all the way along the canal in the gloom. The colourful narrowboats were lost in the shadows. It wasn't until we were back in the marina and moored up and ready to leave that the sky had lifted enough for a decent picture.

Our friends had been promising us this trip for a very long time, and despite the disappointing weather we had a good day!
